Kiswa Arts & Culture Gallery Delivers Landmark Exhibition in Sheffield

On Sunday 21st December, the Kiswa Arts and Culture Gallery delivered a landmark Kiswa exhibition at Jamiyat Tablighul Islam Masjid on Bodmin Street, Sheffield, attracting thousands of visitors from across South Yorkshire and beyond. The exhibition marked a powerful celebration of Islamic art, history, culture, and heritage, while also highlighting the importance of cultural preservation and community cohesion

The event was hosted by An Nisa Events and generously supported by Brother Zia Khan, MBE, alongside Mohamed Amin, Trustee of Jamiat Tablighul Islam Masjid and a member of its management committee. Their leadership, vision, and tireless efforts were instrumental in bringing this significant cultural event to the heart of Sheffield

From the early hours, the masjid welcomed a diverse audience including ulema, scholars, community leaders, families, women, men, and children. The atmosphere throughout the day was one of reverence, reflection, and awe as visitors engaged closely with rare Kiswah artefacts connected to the Holy Kaaba and the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ

The exhibition formally began with Du‘a and Qur’anic recitation (qira’at), setting a deeply spiritual tone for the day, and concluded in the same manner, bookending the experience with remembrance and prayer. Many attendees were visibly moved, offering du‘a throughout the exhibition as they encountered artefacts of immense religious and historical significance

A unique feature of the exhibition was the live curatorial engagement. Curating responsibilities were assigned throughout the day, allowing visitors to receive detailed explanations for each artefact on display. These sessions explored the historical eras, craftsmanship, Qur’anic references, and spiritual meanings behind the Kiswah and associated artefacts, enabling attendees to connect intellectually and spiritually with Islamic heritage

The event was honoured by the presence of several distinguished guests and dignitaries, including Councillor Rukhsana Ismail, Mayor of Rotherham, and Councillor Qais Al Ahdal, Sheffield City Councillor. Their attendance reflected the exhibition’s wider cultural and civic significance. Also present were prominent religious and community figures such as Sheikh Zafrullah Khan and Professor Sameer Akhtar, President of the Council of Mosques South Yorkshire, alongside numerous scholars and representatives from masajid and Islamic organisations across the region

Media engagement played a vital role in the exhibition’s success. Mohammed Ameen (Commitee Member of Tableeghul Islam Masjid and Link FM Radio Station) supported the event with a broadcast ahead of the exhibition, helping to raise awareness and encouraging widespread attendance. The exhibition also received strong endorsements from ulema and scholars across Sheffield, who actively promoted the event within their communities

Notably, the exhibition attracted visitors from different faiths, cultures, and professional backgrounds, including cultural directors and heritage professionals. This diversity underscored the exhibition’s role in fostering interfaith dialogue, mutual respect, and community cohesion through shared appreciation of art, culture, and history

For the Kiswa Arts and Culture Gallery, the event represented more than a single exhibition. It reaffirmed a growing public understanding of the urgent need to preserve Islamic artefacts and heritage, and strengthened the Gallery’s long-term mission to establish the UK’s first permanent Kiswa Arts and Culture Gallery. The overwhelming public response demonstrated strong support for creating a dedicated national space to safeguard and share these priceless treasures for future generations

The organisers extended heartfelt thanks to all those who made the exhibition possible. Special appreciation was given to Brother Zia Khan, BEM, for his exceptional commitment, networking, and drive, and to Mohamed Ameen and the Jamiat Tablighul Islam Masjid committee for their unwavering support and hospitality. Gratitude was also expressed to the ulema, scholars, volunteers, media partners, and community members who shared, endorsed, and attended the event, helping to make it a truly historic occasion for Sheffield
